About
Why “DalyQuiz”?
Legend has it that the word “quiz” was invented in Dublin in 1791, on a bet.
Richard Daly, the manager of Dublin's Theatre Royal, is said to have wagered that he could get the whole city using a word that meant nothing at all, within 48 hours. He sent street children out at night to chalk “QUIZ” on walls and doors, and by morning everyone was asking what it meant. Historians doubt the story, because the word turns up in writing a few years earlier. We like it anyway.
DalyQuiz is named after him, and it sounds like what it is: a daily quiz. One question a day, the same question for the whole world, and a globe that shows how each country answered.
Privacy
What we collect, and what we don't
DalyQuiz has no accounts, no ads, no cookies and no third-party analytics. We use your IP address only to work out which country you are in, and we never store it.
In short
- No sign-up. We never ask for your name, email or anything else about you.
- Country only. Your IP address is turned into a country code (for example, "KR") when you answer. The IP address itself is not saved.
- Only percentages are public. The site shows the share of correct answers for the world, each continent and each country. It never shows how many people answered or who they were.
What is stored
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your language choice, if you pick one at the bottom of the page (kept only in your browser) | To show the site in that language next time |
| A random device ID, kept in your browser's storage | So you can answer once a day and come back to your result |
| Your answer (which option, and whether it was right), with the date and time and the language version of the question you saw | To calculate the percentages, and to check that translations do not change how hard a question is |
| Your country and continent, worked out from your IP address | To show results by country and continent |
Visits and taps on "Copy result", with the link you came from (the referring site, and any ?src= tag) | To see how many people use the quiz and how they find it |
The device ID is a random string created in your browser. It is not linked to your name, email or any account.
Your IP address
When you load the page or answer, our server looks up your country in a database file kept on the server itself. No outside service is asked. The IP address is then discarded.
To stop one network from answering many times, we keep a scrambled code (a one-way hash) made from your IP address and a random value that changes every day. That code is only usable on the day it was made: when the day ends, the random value is deleted and the codes are cleared, so nobody, including us, can turn them back into an IP address.
If you use a VPN, you will be counted in the VPN's country.
What we don't do
- No cookies, and no tracking across other websites.
- No advertising, and we do not sell or share data.
- No Google Analytics or similar tools. Usage numbers are counted on our own server.
- No outside fonts, scripts or content networks.
Other services
None. Every file on this site, including the 3D globe and the country outlines, is served from our own server. Your browser does not contact any other company when you use DalyQuiz.
Your choices
- Clearing this site's data in your browser removes the device ID. You will get a new one on your next visit.
